Conflict Resolution & Collaboration
|
WHY?:
|
For years, labor-management practitioners were
taught to build trust first. Realistically, that
could takes months, even years, if at all. In
the meantime, contracts still needed to be negotiated
and grievances resolved.
In 1995, the Federal Mediation and Conciliation
Service, the Illinois Department of Commerce
and Community Affairs and the Illinois Labor-Management
Cooperation Committee partnered to develop a
three-session series of training in negotiation
and conflict resolution.
|
WHAT?:
|
Conflict Management Inc. (CMI), a Boston-based
consulting firm, facilitated the training. It
was founded by Harvard Law School professor Roger
Fisher, who used his Harvard Negotiating Project
initiative to develop the book Getting to Yes,
which included The Seven Elements of Negotiating,
a unique process that's been highly successful
in resolving even the most difficult problems.
What
was so unique about the "Seven Element" process was that it
provided a framework for negotiating without waiting for trust
to develop. What's so innovative about this process? Trust
is viewed as a by-product and it's good process
that derives good outcome(s).
