CHIP Tip No. 35: Beart the Heat with Water
from CHIP Clinical Manager Amy Lister, R.D.
Water is everywhere! Nearly 70% of the earth is covered by water.
Water also makes up an amazing 60% of our body weight, making it
very important to our overall health and wellness. Unfortunately,
most of us don’t drink enough water. Studies show that one-third
of Americans are slightly dehydrated most of the time, which can
lead to increased risk of kidney stones and urinary tract cancers.
It’s easy to become dehydrated without realizing it, especially
during the extreme temperatures of summer. Our bodies release water
to help regulate our body temperature and keep us cool, so it’s
important to drink plenty of fluids (especially water) when temperatures
rise.
Follow these tips to help you stay cool and hydrated this
summer:
• Drink about eight 8-ounce servings of water every
day.
• Don’t wait to drink water until you’re thirsty;
by then, your body is already dehydrated.
• Keep a bottle of water with you and drink water all day
long. Consider freezing water bottles to keep water cool longer.
• Don’t think that any liquid beverage will do! There
is no substitute for water. Beverages that contain caffeine and
alcohol actually can cause you to lose water and increase your fluid
needs.
• When working or exercising outdoors, be extra cautious.
Be sure to take frequent water breaks and avoid the direct sun if
possible.
• Try adding a fresh slice of lemon, lime, orange or cucumber
to your water to add refreshing flavor.
